One in 10 Americans will be struck with a liver disease at some point in their lives. Right here in Geist, that boils down to about 1,300 residents.
These are statistics Janet Sodell shares with others in her role as Community Events Coordinator for the American Liver Foundation. But they are more than just numbers for Sodell because she is among those living with liver disease.
Having no symptoms, she was diagnosed with Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC) in 2000 after a routine blood test revealed that her liver enzymes were high. The disease has no cure and often results in the need for a liver transplant.
“I was much more freaked when I ...

Indiana was named the land of the Indians, but today we know little about our original residents. Upcoming events and a book and documentary help Geist area residents learn about the Delawares of Indiana.
The Delaware lived in central Indiana along the White River but certainly not by their choice. Originally known as the Lenape, this eastern woodland tribe was forced from its ancestral home (in what is now known as Delaware, New Jersey, southern New York and eastern Pennsylvania) by the encroachment of Europeans who accepted both their hospitality and a lucrative trade arrangement. Giving up their land was a concept unknown to ...

When life comes crashing down on you unexpectedly, you must make a choice to give up or go on. Cave in or reach out. Wallow in misery or count your blessings.
One Geist family has chosen to turn a life-altering diagnosis into a life-enhancing opportunity. Their inspiring story turns us toward thankfulness and motivates us to look to causes outside ourselves.

It was Friday night. Todd and Vicky Andritsch drove up the road from Fox Hollow to Bella Vita for a relaxing family dinner. The kids (five in all) enjoyed watching the activity on the lake during their meal. Afterward, 3-year-old Luke ran around exuberantly feeding the friendly ducks on shore.

Hamilton Southeastern High School fans took their tailgate and body paint to the new Lucas Oil Stadium Saturday night as they rooted on the Royals, who played against the Avon Orioles for their first game of the season (Marsh Indiana Invitational). Many dedicated students tailgated in the parking lot, playing corn hole toss and painting up their bodies as they waited to get a front row seat in the student section.

Lucas Oil Stadium celebrated its first two nights of operation with high school football games. HSE was one of these lucky schools to have the chance ...

Fourth grade students at Forest Glen Elementary not only studied the Olympic games, they participated in them!
Just two weeks into the school year, teachers in the Global Studies program organized an Olympic event complete with five different sports and even gold medals for all of the participating students. It was the culmination of a unit on the Beijing Olympics, including in-depth reports on athletes, sports and Olympic history.
During Friday's Olympic Games, students were split into teams and tried their skills at volleyball, kickball, soccer, cycling and track and field events. What a fun way to tie in a current, global event with learning. Kudos to the Fourth Grade Global team!...

Homeowners living along Admirals Pointe Drive are fed up with speeders through their neighborhood. With a letter of support from Neighborhood Patrol's Brent McFerran, residents have approached the GHPOA Grounds Committee Chairman Dr. John Moore to get a stop sign installed at Admirals Pointe Drive and Challenge Court (map).
"We would have to go to the Department of Public Works in Indianapolis to get this approved," said Dr. Moore at the recent GHPOA board meeting.
But not everyone thinks that stop signs and speed bumps will slow people down, including the Admirals Pointe GHPOA board representative David Hennessy.
"It won't slow them down," said Hennessy. "More stop signs won't solve the problem."
Speeding through our Geist ...

Tuesday, August 26th
Wednesday, August 27th

Because mediation has been ordered by the court, this is an incredibly important meeting for you to attend. Please plan on attending on one of the three nights.
We realize this is very short notice, but the order came out on Wednesday. Hopefully, one of the three nights will work for ...
