More information about blue-green algae

The Center for Earth and Environmental Science handed out a flyer this morning that explains what is known about this toxic blue-green algae that has caused the health warning issued by the Indiana Department of Health. Some of the key points from the flyer are:

What Causes Algal Blooms that Produce this Toxin?

Blue-green algae photosynthesize the same as plants, needing: Sunlight, warm water temperature, nutrients (fertilizer), and still water conditions.

What Can be Done to Reduce Blooms?

Reduce nutrient fertilizer and algaecide treatments.

There was a map on the backside of the flyer showing the expanse of the watershed around Geist Reservoir. Cities as far upstream as Pendleton and Anderson are contributing to the watershed of Geist, meaning this isn’t just a lakeside issue.
