Local Geist Artist Displays Platinum Quality with Heart of Gold
Filed Under: Local People
The work of Geist artist Sue Carlson was recently featured at the The Blue Egg Art Gallery in Carmel as it celebrated its grand opening Nov. 3rd. Carlson specializes in portraitures in pencil and charcoal.
The grand opening of the Blue Egg Gallery drew many visitors, including Carmel Mayor James Brainard, a strong supporter of the arts who emphasizes, “Art is crucial to the quality of life and is a key ingredient in order to attract competitive jobs necessary to the community.” Brainard posed with Carlson in front of her works to welcome the gallery as an asset to the community.
Carlson grew up in suburban Chicago and attended Illinois State University. She continued her art education with the American Academy of Art in Chicago and worked in commercial illustration. She and her husband, Steve, came to Indianapolis to raise their children.
Carlson is finally living out her passion of drawing portraits and displaying her works in every artist’s dream world– the newly thriving artistic arena of Carmel’s Arts and Design District. She is hopeful that such a district will one day unfold in the Fishers-Geist area.
Although Carlson’s work represents a breathtaking quality of platinum, her heart signifies pure gold. She has always dreamed of donating her profits from her artwork to charities that reach out to neglected and abused children. Now she is finally able to do it.
Her unselfishness shines all the more when you consider that the pencil/charcoal medium can be extremely tedious and time consuming. Many of us cannot relate to tapping a pencil repeatedly for hours in order to project a tiny image, but for Carlson, she finds complete happiness.
“I find slow, detailed drawing extremely relaxing,” she said. “And watching the human face and figure taking shape with all its emotion is very fulfilling.”
If you would like to contact Sue Carlson, you may call the gallery at 536-4696 or email her at scarlson@insightbb.com. You may also view her work at the Blue Egg Gallery, located at 430 North Rangeline Road.

What a great article-it features our local talent right here in Geist. It also shows how Carmel values it local artists. And its great to know that galleries like this exist, so you don’t need to be a European artist with a multi-thousand dollar price to get into a gallery. And the fact that she is donating her profits is a lesson many of us in a consumer-driven profit oriented society could learn a lesson from.

Sue’s artwork is beautiful. The energy and emotions of each portrait are pronounced in every drawing. The Blue Nest Gallery is
set in a quaint cottage and Carmel, and inside the cottage a variety of media and artists are displayed. I would highly recommend a visit to the gallery.

Thanks for this creative and very informative article capturing not only the artists beautiful talent as an artist but also her generous heart in donating her profits to benefit neglected and abused children. How insightful of Mayor Brainard to realize that ‘art is crucial to the quality of life—”. Our society could certainly use more men/women in a leadership role w/that kind of vision. Blue Egg Gallery is a unique expression of many forms of art, an asset to the community of Carmel and a very enjoyable place to visit.
