Go Hiking, Wade in the Creek or Ride a Tire Swing at Area Parks this Summer

Oaklandon park Are your children tired of playing on the same old backyard swing set? Maybe it is time to break the backyard boredom with a visit to a local park. Kids and parents alike can benefit from the fresh air, exercise and fun that our regional parks have to offer. The Geist area boasts a variety of recreational facilities from hiking trails through dense forests to toddler-sized playscapes. Here’s a look at some of our local offerings:

  • Fort Harrison State Park, named for Indiana native President Benjamin Harrison, is located in Lawrence. It combines an interesting military history with abounding natural beauty. Opened in 1906, the land was part of the Fort Harrison military training camp, and once housed World War II prisoners. In 1991, the military base was closed, and four years later a portion of the land was set aside to be used as parkland. Fast forward 100 years from its inception, and the park’s serenity seems a world away from its military origins. The vast expanse of its 1,700 acres houses one of the largest hardwood forests in Indiana. Rugged hiking trails wind throughout the park, and the Saddle Barn offers pony rides and horseback riding excursions. A paved trail with a scenic backdrop is perfect for bike riding, rollerblading or stroller pushing. An 18 hole golf course redesigned by Pete Dye is a major draw at the park, attracting golfers from all over the state. Several playgrounds dot the area, and the many ponds throughout the park are perfect for fishing.
  • Oaklandon Play Park (my family’s favorite park) is easy to find. Just look for the tall water tower painted like a hot air balloon. Located in Oaklandon just south of the railroad tracks, this park is small in size but packs a big punch. The frequent rumbling of a train passing by on the CSX Railroad line always sends throngs of children racing to the fence. The friendly train conductor waves to the children while giving the whistle a generous toot. While this park is lacking in free space, it makes up for it by providing a large wooden play structure. Tunnels, forts and secret hide-outs abound in this area. A separate sheltered picnic area and swing set is located in the front of the park. This park is ideal for a short outing with children.
  • Brooks School Park Brooks School Park (located on Brooks School Road just north of 116th Street) is an expansive, kid-friendly park with lots of variety to offer throughout its 16.5 acres. The entrance is one of its best attributes. A low-lying concrete walkway over Mud Creek allows park goers to experience the creek close-up. Children love to wade in the creek while adults find it a tranquil spot to sit. Older kids enjoy playing on the basketball court and the spacious soccer fields. A unique toddler play area designated for the smallest park goers is also a popular destination and features a turtle to climb atop. A picnic shelter, horse shoe pits and a paved walkway encircling the park add to the fun. Follow the paved path to the northern side of the park, and you will discover a secluded pier overlooking Mud Creek.
  • Off the beaten path, Geist Park is an undiscovered gem. You can find this peaceful park on the eastern outskirts of Geist, on Florida Road in Fortville. The country setting of this 17-acre park is its most charming feature. Situated on the banks of Fall Creek, Geist Park has become an attractive fishing spot. Nearby, a pier overlooks the water and offers a picturesque place to relax and enjoy the natural scenery. Winding through woodlands and along the shore of Fall Creek, a main trail and off-shooting footpaths allow you an intimate experience with nature. There is also a playground with a sizable picnic shelter nearby.
