Geist Gives: Socially-conscious Salon Owner Goes Green with Natural Products

The Studio Salon and Spa owner Suzanne Haire incorporates doing the right thing into her daily business. The Studio Salon and Spa, located at 5501 East 71st street, Unit 6 (just west of Binford on 71st) has taken extensive efforts to research and now stock and utilize chemical, peroxide and formaldehyde-free beauty products for their clients. Suz explained, “the majority of products on the market including hair colors, perms, nail polish, shampoos and styling aids are all natural in my salon, rather than chemically based.”
Suzanne personally uses no ammonia or bleach, as those can be carcinogens. All skincare products are naturally based botanical and mineral products. Even the nail polish, called “Chi” lacquer is nano silver infused, which prevents the spread of fungus and kills bacteria. “Research shows that within 30 seconds of being applied to the skin or hair, chemicals can be detected in the liver” explained Suz.
Suz says that she has not seen other local salons follow her lead despite the obvious health and green benefit to clients and the environment. She works constantly to educate her staff and clients and also absorbs the additional costs of these products, not passing them onto her clients. She says the hair color covers gray, holds color well and includes red and high-lift blond highlights with no damage to hair or scalp.
Long socially-conscious, Suz is passionate to support breast cancer survivors, inspired by her mother, who is a survivor. Suz offers free pedicures to cancer patients and specializes in wig fittings and styling. She carries a unique and rather new product, microline hair extensions. These extend a patient’s own hair with natural human hair to create a full head of hair with body and volume. The extensions work well for chemotherapy patients with hair growing back and for those with otherwise thinning hair problems.
A Crystal Pointe resident, Suz has owned The Studio for four years. In addition to the salon and spa business, Suz also specializes in event planning, birthday, anniversary and particularly wedding parties.
