Friends in HSE Community Organize Fundraising Efforts for Local Family in Need

Blake and Paige Neata The Geist community is pulling together to support a local family. Jeff Neata is on a long journey to recovery after suffering a debilitating stroke in March. His family, which is active in the Hamilton Southeastern High School community, is grateful for local efforts to raise funds on their behalf.

Jeff’s stroke — the result of an aneurism — has left him completely paralyzed on one side. Insurance money has run out, and Jeff still needs daily care in a nursing home, although he has recently begun trying to walk, according to family friend Debbie Fohrer.

Shortly after the stroke occurred, Fohrer, along with a group of HSE moms, set up a fund for the Neata family and sent out emails soliciting donations.

“It will take months to determine Jeff’s long-term prognosis and potential,” Fohrer said. “In the meantime, as the family deals with the challenges this presents, they are attempting to meet day-to-day requirements, as well as impending issues like graduation and preparation for college. The strength, faith and energy this takes is enormous.”

The Neata’s daughter, Paige, graduated from HSE in May, while son Blake is preparing for his junior year. Their mom, Stephanie, is wondering how she will pay Paige’s first college bill, due in July, and both kids need repairs on their cars. Thankfully, Blake’s football team at HSE generously donated half of the proceeds ($500) from its annual car wash to help the Neatas, but the road ahead is still a long one.

“While Stephanie struggles to supervise Jeff’s situation, hold down a job, care for her family, and evaluate and manage their current and future financial situation, the family has immediate needs for which they find themselves unprepared,” Fohrer said.

You can make a difference in this urgent situation by sending a donation to:

National City Bank
7007 Graham Road
Indianapolis, IN 46220

Make checks payable to: Jon Fohrer

“Please know that Stephanie, Paige, Blake and Danielle have been overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity already shown their family,” Fohrer said. “Meals and support have been gratefully accepted. This will certainly be the case for any further assistance you and your family can offer.”

About the Author

As Managing Editor of at.Geist.com, it's probably no suprise that I have loved writing ever since I was old enough to make up a story and write it down on paper. In high school, I discovered journalism and began writing "true stories" for my school paper. My favorite type of story then (and now) was a good feature article on an interesting person. I was editor-in-chief my senior year and loved the opportunity to be "in-the-know" and to be "known" (since I was always considered "shy" by my peers). I decided early on to pursue journalism during my college years at Ball State, where I worked on the Ball State Daily News, interned at the Kokomo Tribune, and then went to work for The Muncie Star (now the Star-Press). Since I've always enjoyed capturing candid moments, I decided to get a minor in photojournalism, as well. I graduated in 1996 and married my college sweetheart, William. We moved to Castleton, and I worked as a reporter for the Noblesville Daily Ledger (out of the Fishers office on Ind. 37) until my first child was born in June of 1999. Since then, I have enjoyed staying home with my three children, ages 3-9. Through the years, I have done freelance journalism, wedding and family photography and corporate public relations. Being a Mom is the best job of all! To accommodate our growing family, we moved to the Highlands at Geist in October 2005. I started writing for atGeist in early 2006 and was excited to be getting involved with the community while using my journalism skills. I became Managing Editor in early 2007 and have enjoyed meeting many of my "neighbors" who are doing fascinating things. There are so many great people and great stories to be told "at Geist!"
