Tom DiMartino is far from your typical retiree. Originally from Connecticut, Tom moved in Indiana 1989 when his computer systems company secured a large contract with the State of Indiana. Two years later, tired of commuting, he moved his wife JoEllen and three children to Admirals Sound. He laughed when he relayed stories of his adjustment to the Hoosier lifestyle, citing a friendly and laid back style foreign to him.
Lucky for us he has stayed and has made a significant contribution to our community. Most notable is his deep involvement with the Lawrence Township School Foundation (“LTSF”). DiMartino says the Lawrence Township schools were the deciding factor in where the family purchased a home. Involved since 1997, Tom has served in many roles including President, Treasurer and Committee Chair of the Alumni committee. He credits wife JoEllen with getting him involved. When JoEllen was already too busy filling volunteer roles, he was recruited and the involvement has not stopped. Tom sold his highly successful business in 1997. While he does enjoy golf, he works nearly full time on LTSF fundraising, now projected to triple next year.
The Lawrence Township School Foundation exists to support the township schools; form strategic and business plans; outline future goals and objectives; and help the Foundation seek philanthropic support from individuals, corporations, foundations, associations and organizations. To obtain private philanthropic support, the Foundation annually sponsors very successful events such as the Teacher Recognition Luncheon, “Fore The Kids” Golf Tournament and “Light their Future Gala” (April 20, 2007). The Foundation is particularly proud of their grants program. Through the years, hundreds of students, staff and faculty have received the benefit of over $1 million generated to meet innovative program requests.
Other projects where Tom has devoted his time, talent and energy include the Oaklandon Youth Organization (OYO), where he served as president for 3 years, donated a shelter house and founded their Softball and Baseball Tournament (DiMartino’s match concession funds earned at the tournament) in memory of Geist area family friend David Manlove. An upcoming event at the DiMartino home will also benefit the “24 Club” providing funds for families needing substance abuse counseling and whose insurance has run out. DiMartino has served on the Community Task Force for redevelopment in the City of Lawrence working to revitalize the Pendleton Pike corridor.
Tom was quick to emphasize that philanthropy is truly a family affair. Wife JoEllen is an active volunteer with Lawrence North High School, Habitat for Humanity and established a matching grant scholarship fund for Spanish Immersion students at Lawrence North. Daughter Jenna is a graduate of New York University and works as a social worker for special needs children in the city. Son Jamie is an IU student and daughter Jessica is a student at Lawrence North High School who volunteers at a shelter and has plans for a mission trip to Guatemala this summer.
Many readers may know Tom by his music if not by name. Tom (joined by son Jamie) has a jazz band Nexus that performs regularly at The Fox Restaurant and other venues. Check them out on January 12th at The Fox. A CD will be available at the atGeist online store. Tom also plays drums twice each Sunday at Holy Spirit Church, where the family is active.
When asked his 2007 goals, he states that accelerating the fundraising efforts for the LTSF to earn $1 million is his priority. He meets often with investors, so be ready when he comes knocking! The DiMartino’s intend to continue to support innovative programs, particularly in performing arts. In an effort to support Tom’s efforts, we ask readers to consider a donation to a new program:
Geist Gives/ Lawrence Township School Foundation After School Mentoring Project: No One Home Alone
The Lawrence Township School Foundation’s after-school mentoring program provides a creative, constructive alternative to being home alone for many children. A gift of only $100 provides an entire semester of mentoring guidance for a child. It’s a powerful program with a positive, lasting impact for each child. This need is in our own community.
Tom is looking for an individual sponsor for 100 children – a commitment of $10,000 by January 31, 2007.
Contact Tom DiMartino at 446-8452 if you would like more information or with questions. Supporters will be recognized in atGeist future newsletters.
