LC Gymnastics Team Wins State Title

Lawrence Central’s gymnastics team — led by four Geist residents — recently claimed its first state championship in the IHSAA Gymnastics State Finals at Perry Meridian High School in Indianapolis.

Competing team members were freshmen Camille Hayes and Jessie Leko and seniors Rachel Hilgendorf and Kelsey Kottkamp. This was the first gymnastics team title in Lawrence Central’s history, and only the fifth team title of any sport in the school’s history. LC has been to State six times, resulting in two 2nd place finishes, one 3rd, one 4th and a 7th place due to multiple injuries.

“Winning State was a great ending for our two seniors.,” said Michelle Post, who coaches the team with Larry Russell. “We are looking forward to the next few years working with such a young team.”

Freshmen Jessie Leko and Camille Hayes finished fourth and ninth, respectively, in the All-Around competition. Leko accumulated 37.3 points on the day including a second place finish in the uneven bars and a fifth place in the balance beam. Hayes totaled 36.9 points after finishing fourth in the vault and fifth in the floor exercise. Teammate Rachel Hilgendorf placed 8th in the vault. Other members of the LC team are XinXin Li, Emma Pierce and Allie Billows.
