Save the Bees campaign at lawrence central

Bee Photo by Kobi Trice By Kobi Trice, Lawrence Central High School Senior–They buzz. They pollinate. They sting.

What are they? Bees. Those annoying insects dressed in black and yellow that all too often sting.

The very same insects that help give us fruits and vegetables also make honey for a wide variety of lotions, creams and waxes. They even produce a pellet surrounded with wax that helps suck up oils from oil spills.

“The problem,” said LC zoology teacher Kathy Madren, “is that the world’s bee population is shrinking and no one seems to know why.”

So Madren’s students have decided to take matters into their own hands and help by raising awareness of the bees.

“The Bee Movie is just a coincidence,” Madren said. “This whole bee idea has been a snowball effect. First we wanted to raise awareness, and then we wanted to raise money to help, and then we decided to keep the money we raised and build a home for bees and keep them here on campus.”

The money will be used to buy bee hives, netting, gloves and other equipment needed to help start a home for the bees at LC.

Madren’s classes will be taking full responsibility for the bees; it will become part of their everyday routine, part of their projects and homework.

Additional information on the bee project is available from Madren at 545-5301.
