Geist Jewelers to Sponsor Geist Half, designing & creating medals
August 29, 2007 by Tom · Leave a Comment
Organizers of the Geist Half Marathon & 5K Run/Walk Presented by Community Health Network today announced Geist Jewelers as a $10,000 Captain’s Sponsor of the inaugural race around Geist Reservoir on May 17th, 2008. As a part of their sponsorship, Geist Jewelers will design and create the top three medals for the Half Marathon and 5K races as well as commemorative medals for all race finishers.
“We are excited to be a part of this great community event,” said Dennis Morton, co-owner of Geist Jewelers with his wife Beth. “Our designers will come up with unique custom designed medals that we will cast right here in our store near the start line at 116th and Olio. They will definitely be something that everyone will cherish.”
In addition to the medals, Geist Jewelers will provide free engraving on the back for medalists who come by their store after the race.
“An event like this wouldn’t be possible without the support of the community,” said Britt. “Area businesses partners like Geist Jewelers help make our mission of promoting healthy lifestyle choices to our area children possible.”
Designed to help kids get healthy and fit, the “My Community Gets Healthy” program will be phased into Lawrence Township schools starting this fall. Other health and wellness programs will be funded in nearby Hamilton Southeastern Schools as well.
Geist Jewelers joins Bella Vita Ristorante as a $10,000 supporter of the inaugural race. Sponsors and volunteers for the event are still needed. For sponsorship information or to register to volunteer, visit www.GeistHalf.com.

Toxic Algae Problem to be Discussed at Yacht Club
Senator Gard, Senator Merritt, Veolia Water, Indiana Health Department, IDEM, and DNR representatives to be on-hand for information session
Residents of Geist will be able to discuss concerns regarding the recent outbreak of troublesome blue-green algae in Geist Reservoir during a meeting at the Indianapolis Yacht Club 8 a.m. Friday, August 31, with Sens. Jim Merritt (R-Indianapolis) and Beverly Gard (R-Greenfield). Sen. Merritt represents Geist residents in Marion County and Sen. Gard represents Geist residents in Hamilton County.
Officials at the Indiana State Department of Health issued a warning against recreational use of the reservoir earlier this month when routine tests found the algae in the water. When consumed, the algae can cause gastric distress, respiratory problems and, in rare cases, liver failure. A rash can also develop if skin comes in contact with the contaminated water.
“We’re going to hear from representatives of state government as well as a water quality scientist from IUPUI,” Gard said.
Dr. Lenore Tedesco, director of the Center for the Earth and Environmental Science at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis will be present to discuss results of recent tests she conducted on water samples from the Reservoir. Representatives from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Veolia Water and the IDOH, will also be in attendance.
“Water quality is a vital concern to everyone,” Merritt said. “I am very interested to hear what Dr. Tedesco has to say about the water quality of Geist Reservoir and how we can proactively handle this situation in the future.”
Location of the Indianapolis Yacht Club: 12900 Fall Creek Rd., McCordsville.

Big Brothers Watch Colts Up Close Thanks to Old National Bank
August 29, 2007 by Tom · Leave a Comment
For two Big Brothers and two Little Brothers matched in mentoring relationships through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana, the Monday, August 20th pre-season game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Chicago Bears was more than just another night of Monday Night Football. Thanks to the generosity of Old National Bank, these “Bigs” and “Littles” enjoyed the game from a unique vantage point – the field.
The donation of field-level Colts tickets gave Big Brother Regan Johnson and his 17 year-old Little Brother Max and Big Brother Matt Hammond and his 9 year-old Little Brother Kayyonn (pictured) the opportunity to share an unforgettable experience together that would not otherwise have been possible.
Old National Bank is a corporate partner of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana (BBBSCI) and nationally a corporate partner of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. In addition to offering tickets to Monday’s Colts game, Old National Bank encourages employees to volunteer their time as mentors in Big Brothers Big Sisters youth mentoring programs. Eight Old National Bank employees volunteer as Big Brothers or Big Sisters with BBBSCI, including Indianapolis Region President of Old National Bank Randy Reichmann.
Reichmann has said of his interest in the program, “As we get older, life becomes less about being successful and more about being significant. The Big Brothers Big Sisters program is a chance to make a difference…with people who are passionate about the cause and committed to making this a great experience for the child and the volunteer.”
Reichmann will be a Big Brother for the first time beginning this fall at IPS #2, one of many BBBSCI school partners that allows mentors to meet with youth once a week at the school during lunch or recess. Many Big “Bigs” find this volunteer option to be a good fit for their schedules.
Reichmann discussed his decision to get involved, “I was concerned about the time commitment. My kids are getting older but still remain my highest priority so I wondered if I could really make this work. The mentor program [in local schools] was the perfect solution for me. I could make it work in my schedule, get a feel for what being a Big is all about, and hopefully help out a child.”
In addition to many IPS schools, BBBSCI partners with schools in Hamilton and Johnson counties to offer this mentoring opportunity to youth and potential “Bigs” in Central Indiana.
