My Husband Enjoyed his Over Over Over the Hill Birthday!
April 11, 2007 by ManagingEditor · Leave a Comment
I never did such a crazy and such an on the spur of the moment thing, as I recently did for my husband’s 50th birthday party. I hired Dancing the Night Away on the suggestion of my girlfriend who recently went to one of their bachelorette parties. She told me she had emptied her purse of all her $1.00 bills and had an absolutely fantastic time and thought George would love an over the hill birthday party celebration that Dancing the Night away custom designs for each birthday. I even went so far as kept the party a surprise and that was very hard with over 50 guests, especially since some of the guests were bowling buddies that get very chatty over beers. The DJ was a guy name Ice. He wouldn’t tell me his real name and that only added to the fun. I got my neighbor to get George out of the area for several hours before the party was to start and I made the guest’s park in a church parking lot and walk to our house. Of course, I promised rides back to their cars afterwards. The best part was that I locked the front door. This is the door George always enters from. When he could open the door because I removed his house key before he left with our neighbor, I had Ice answer the door. Everyone was in the basement or kitchen except me who was hiding in our dining room. George and I have been married for 30 years and I wanted to see his face when this strange guy answered the door. So there I am hiding in the dining room and Ice is answering the door acting like he lives in our house not George and George was completely lost for words. I saw him take two steps back to look at the address on the house to make sure it was the right house. Then Ice asked him what he wanted and George looked at him and wanted to know what he was doing in his house. Ice just shut the door and locked it. Everyone is laughing but George who is now calling me on his cell phone. When I answered all I told him was that Ice was a friend of mine. The phone went dead the banging on the door began and Ice kicked up the music by playing Happy Birthday.
After I led George downstairs to the basement and everyone yelled Happy Birthday George, he said Pat I was going to punch that guy in the nose. I told him that wouldn’t be a nice thing to do to the DJ. After a few beers and some food Ice had George dancing and much later singing. I can’t tell you enough how much fun this over the hill party was. I highly recommend Dancing the Night Away if you are looking for something special. I also heard that their bachlorette parties are quite enjoyable. Thanks Dancing the Night Away for a great evening and thanks Ice for being a sport. I never forget the look on George’s face when you answered the door.

Beauty or Beast: We All Need Dental Care (Video)
April 11, 2007 by ManagingEditor · Leave a Comment
It may be hard to believe, but the Indy 500 Princesses and the Indianapolis Ice players share the same Dentist. The busy Dentist is our own Geist resident, Dr. John C. Lowe of Contemporary Dental Concepts.
Dr. Lowe is the official Dentist of the Indianapolis 500 Festival this year, and his job is primarily whitening the teeth of all 33 Indy 500 Princesses. He has also been chosen as the official dentist of the Indianapolis Ice hockey team for 2007.
One day he could be whitening the smile of a princess and another he may be picking up a bag of teeth from a hockey player who had a run in with his opponent.
“It’s all in a days work,” he says.
Lowe says the big difference between the two groups (besides the obvious) is the approach to dental care.
“The princesses will come into my office to see what they need to have done, even if they already have a beautiful smile,” says Dr. Lowe. “Hockey players, however, keep up the well known ‘tough guy’ image and rarely want to come in, even if they lose a tooth. We have to really encourage them to come on in and let us fix them up.”
Dr. Lowe says he and his family enjoys going to the hockey games and if he cannot attend, he is always on-call during the season.
“Amazingly,” he says, “I haven’t had an emergency yet this year with the team.”
One visit to Dr. Lowe’s Keystone and 96th office and you can see how this dentist handles it all with such ease.
His office is warm and inviting with faux painted walls and freshly baked cookies on the counter. (No kidding). He makes his patients feel quite at home.
Throughout the month of April, the princesses are invited to stop in, meet the dentist and receive a free gift bag of Crest products.
“It is an exciting time, leading up to the month of May,” says Dr. Lowe.
Colleen Bartel, coordinator of the 500 Princesses, says it is great having a dentist for the girls.
“The girls come from all across the state, so while they are in town, they can have a dentist professionally whiten their teeth for their appearances around town, as well as take care of any dental emergencies that may arise,” said Bartel, who is also a patient of Dr. Lowe’s.
Dr. Lowe graduated from Indiana University in 1996 and created Contemporary Dental Concepts in the summer of 2005 as a way to offer not only regular dental needs to his patients but also an extensive selection of cosmetic services.
A Cambridge resident, Dr. Lowe lives with his wife, Beth, and their three children, John (7), Christopher (4) and Sarah (20 months). And yes, they all have beautiful teeth.
So whether you notice some flashy, white smiles at the track during the month of May, or a broken smile in need of repair at an Ice game, you’ll know who has been working hard. From the beauties at the track to the beasts on the ice, “team” Dentist Dr. John Lowe has got them all covered this year!
Got Poop? Call a Professional (Video)
April 11, 2007 by ManagingEditor · Leave a Comment
Ahh, Spring… daffodils blooming, sparrows singing and dozens of doggie-do landmines hidden throughout the yard.
Before the kids can start up that game of backyard baseball, someone has to scoop all that poop. Before you start throwing pleas, bargains and threats at your spouse, maybe you should consider hiring a professional.
A professional poop scooper? Yep! Cleaning up doggie-do is the fastest-growing business in the pet industry, according to Sarah Galvin, who started Stanley’s Pet Services in January. The service, named after her Black Lab mix, is among several new companies offering pet waste removal in the Fishers/Geist area.
Pet Butler, which also started servicing the area in January, is a national franchise that claims to be ”# 1 in the # 2 business.” Local owners and Preserve residents Chris and Christy Bozic said they got some laughs from friends and family when they announced they were going into the poop business. But after thinking it over for a few minutes, people usually tell them: “That’s a really great idea.”
And business is really, well, “picking up.” So far, Operations Manager Matt East has been doing all the dirty work himself, but the Bozics plan to hire another scooper to help out soon. East is cleaning up to 50 yards a day and has secured a deal with Indy Parks to pick up poop at its Bark Park in Broadripple.
“The business is taking off faster than I expected,” said Chris, who still works full-time in sales at Business Improvement Company while Christy works for Purdue University as Manager of Business Innovations.
The couple have been planning to launch their own business for quite some time but didn’t settle on the right one until they found Pet Butler. With two dogs and a cat of their own, they never seemed to have time to keep the yard tidy.
“If we would pay for that service, there had to be other folks out there who would pay for that, too,” Chris said.
He sees the pet waste business following the pattern of success in the lawn care industry. Just a decade ago, very few people paid to have someone fertilize or trim their yards. Now it’s become the norm.
“It’s really a quality-of-life issue,” Christy said. “People would rather be out spending time with their families.”
Not only will it save you time, but there are health and environmental issues to consider as well. Pet waste is the No. 1 contributor to groundwater contamination, Chris points out. Dog waste can also harbor Parvo Disease or worms, which carry a minimal risk of infection to humans but are easily transmitted from pet to pet.
Pet waste also can be responsible for causing ugly brown spots on the lawn. Never make the mistake of thinking dog poop is a good fertilizer, said Galvin of Stanley’s.
“It’s just important to realize there are bacteria in pet waste that is harmful to humans and the ground,” she said.
Those are good reasons to point out if your friends start calling you lazy for hiring this dirty job out. And those providing the service say it’s not just for the elite class. Weekly service starts around $10, and the frequency of cleanings is completely up to the homeowner. Service can be scheduled multiple times a week, monthly or even on a one-time only basis. Cat litter box exchange is also available.
So before you pick up that pooper scooper (or start nagging your spouse again), remember what the Bozics say: “We’re here to stop the fighting over whose job it is to scoop the poop. Got poop? We scoop!”
