Geist Resident Opens New Veterinary Practice

Dr. Risser met me right on time in front of his new office opening on February 15th, 2007. As I visited with Dr. Risser I quickly saw his excitement about his new practice in the area and admired his spunk about what he does. He really seems to have it down right and by that I mean his “sense” of connection with people and pets.

Dr. Risser got his degree from Texas A & M and as a suburban kid decided to go into a small animal veterinary practice. While he loved studying farm animals in vet school, he eventually decided that his heart was with people and their smaller pets. His new practice reflects that quite well as he offers people and their pets a wellness care aspect as well as providing resources and education to go along with that. He specializes in well patient care such as vaccinations and the educational aspect of caring for your pet, but he also likes the challenges of internal medicine and behavioral medicine. He also offers care with dermatology and allergic skin disease, dentistry, spay / neuter, geriatric medicine, cancer medicine and chemotherapy.

He lives in the area and wants to emphasize that he is interested in helping the community and their pets with the stages of life from an angle that allows him the time with folks to answer all of their questions on animals from the young to the old. He has a lovely wife, three children and dogs as well so he does understand how valuable time is and how important all members of the family can be when having to make a difficult decision about the care of an animal.

He has hired groomer Pam Kellam who has twenty years of experience and the patience like no other with all kinds of dogs. He is excited to have such a well qualified and caring individual on staff!

The normal business hours will be Monday through Friday opening at 7:30 a.m. and staying until 7 p.m. on Monday and Thursday evenings and closing Tuesday and Friday evenings at 6pm. Saturdays will be from 7:30 until noon.

I asked him about tips for our pets this time of year (when the weather finally turns cold) and he said the main thing is that if your pets are accustomed to being outside then it is ok as long as you provide shelter from the wind, make sure they have food and their water isn’t frozen. He isn’t against sweaters in keeping the pet warm! If your dog is not used to being outside then it isn’t a good time of year to start leaving them out. Just use common sense, love and treat them as a part of your family.

He has a terrific website www.fallcreekvet.com in which he answers questions, provides information and shows various pictures of pets. He includes a column, monthly newsletter and an area with frequently asked questions. I like the page that tells us why his practice exists. You can tell by his website that he is very interested in keeping people and pets informed, healthy and well educated about veterinary medicine.

Dr. Risser’s new practice will certainly be a great asset to the area.
